This is an illustration of a rare Uncompahgre fritillary butterfly. It has one of the smallest ranges of North American butterflies; it was discovered on Mount Uncompahgre in Colorado in 1978 and is limited to 11 verified sites on the San Juan mountains. They like cool, wet climates and are found primarily on northeast-facing slopes.
